Local Airport: SOU

As the previous thread (16) has exceeded the 100 posts mark and is now too large to effectively manage, I've started a new thread here.

Please kindly post all your MILITARY updates, requests & corrections here and I'll action them as quickly as I can.

Kind regards, Brian

PLEASE NOTE: I will be taking 6 weeks out of updating from 1st December 2021 until early January 2022 in order to try to catch-up with some of my own logging (still in October 1977!) and personal life.

Any requests posted by the end of November will be actioned before I go to sleep!

Kind regards, Brian

Hi Brian,

Yes you are right another typo, BAPC.274 not 272 is correct. May I return the compliment with a small slip on your part, WV605 you have listed as a Jet Provost rather than a Provost. I would say enjoy your time out but I know you have desperately been trying to break out of the 1970's in terms of your own logs so I am guessing you will probably end up spending even more time than usual adding items to the DB while trying to catch up.

A few more to add please, hopefully the last I need to add until you return in January. I have tried to restrict it to real aeroplanes this time but one or two pretend ones have sneaked in.

Some confusion about this one, many online sources list it as ex 45-49192 c/n 399-55731 which crashed as N47DD in 1980. N47DD was rebuilt and is still flying as G-THUN (and is already on the DB) I believe this aircraft was constructed as a composite using parts from N47DD when it was rebuilt after the crash plus parts from another P-47. I have no doubt that with your vast military aircraft knowledge you can get to the bottom of this one.

Hi Mike,

Well at least you had a few 'real' ones in the last list (I think I've even seen a couple of them!).

The SR-71 is 61-7962 and in the DB. The Fokker D.VIII is in as 8417-18 as the system doesn't like '/';

Some confusion over a few of the a/c,

The original Hunter F.6 nose was sent to the Museum after the a/c was rebuilt to T.66D for India so two entries for N-250.

No info on the P-47D 42-26413. I show it as being destroyed 30.12.1944 at Boxted, Essex, where it crashed due engine failure.

Two entries for CH-47D as the original fwd fus is in the Museum while the rest was rebuilt as an active CH-47F;

Hope this all makes sense, and apologies for my silly error with the Piston Provost turning it into a jet !

Am working my way through F-5's, T-37's & T-38's at Williams AFB having just finished F-104's, F-15's & F-4's at Luke AFB & a bunch of UH-19's & UH-25's stored at Mesa. Then it's onto D-M for A-7's, A-10s & O-2's before doing the scrapyards and then my first MASDC tour. Going to keep me busy for a while!

Kindest regards, Brian

Hi Brian,

Thanks for adding my last list so quickly and for trying to pick the bones out of the confusion on one or two entries.

I have a small amount of additional info on the P-47 in the American Air Museum, it is clearly not the original 42-25413 just painted to represent it. It seems to be a composite using parts of from N47DD left over after the rebuild. My Wreaks and Relics 10th edition lists it as 'a basket case of parts for rebuild including substantial sections of N47DD' whereas the latest edition lists it as 226413 and as being ex N47DD (no mention of the fact that G-THUN is also ex N47DD but still flying)

Also on the last list BAPC.394, you have listed as BNAPC.394. Clearly a slip of the keyboard whilt trying to blast through my post so quickly.

Thanks for all the hard work as good look with your own logs in December.

Hi Brian,
Back to pester you again, twice in the one week after so long! Hope you are well. This is not strictly military but the aircraft involved were originally military so they may appear somewhere in your encyclopaedic (sic) records.
N91935 Douglas C1A Skyraider AD-4N c/n 7462 Univair Ferry
N91945 Douglas C1A Skyraider AD-4NA c/n 7682 Univair Ferry
Both passed through Dublin on their way to or from a film set in March 1977.
Could they be added to the DB with any update you may be able to discover.
Enjoy your well earned break and have a happy & safe xmas.

Greg

Hi Brian

Passed by ESS on the way from work this afternoon and saw no Dak but a JU-52. Found a lot of bloody press articles without any useful info and https://www.ju52.org/19.htm which says it would be:

REGISTRATION DETAILS FOR 1Z+IK (NATIONAAL MILITAIR MUSEUM) AAC1 TOUCAN

Are you able to confirm and update. I couldn't see any reg or code although 95 % of the possible parts to carry one were visible for me. Anyway this is a chance for me to wish You a Merry X-mas and a happy New Year since I can't see any chance for me to spot any military stuff until then.

Thanks in advance. Stay healthy!

Hi Erdni,

Many thanks for the update on the Ju-52. I understand it's been under restoration since 2014 so the reg has probably gone (for now) until she is properly displayed, although I thought they may have painted it on before she left the restoration hangar!

You & Gerhard have a fantastic Christmas & hopefully get to see you both in 2022 !

Hi Steve,

Latest list has now been added.

The UH-1H is in as 66-00828 to standardise all US Army rotary wings with fiscal+5 digits, The Spitfire FSM 'K9998' is BAPC.431 (prob just a typo).

Have a fabulous Christmas & Happy New Year (although if the server continues to run as slow as it has this weekend I fear I'll still be in exile next Xmas adding my MASDC 1977 list - just over 4,400 to add!)

Well, that's it from me for this year as I'm taking a few weeks out to focus on my own logging and get back to some kind of social life (although with the terrible server times at the moment it may be a couple of months!). The next updates from me will be actioned mid-January.

I'd like to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

Hi Brian, Hope you had a great Xmas and got all your updates done. Just updating a spreadsheet here and spotted that EC-ZDF Casa Aviojet at SBAC Farnborough in 78 is on the DB as EC-ZDF but when you click on it for further details it comes up as EC-ZDZ. I think you were at the same show as me and here is a link http://www.aviationcorner.net/show_photo_en.asp?id=194137 showing a photo of said aircraft with the id clearly on show. Can you check to see if there has been a mix up or did it get re-regd to EC-ZDZ subsequently.
Many thanks and heres to a Happy & Healthy New Year for us all.

Hi Greg,

Happy New Year to you!

Unfortunately my Xmas/New Year break was frustrated by the extremely sloooow server response times meaning I could only load 450 of the 4,000 serials I was intending. I've finished my A-3 Skywarrior sightings at MASDC in 10.1977 and am now half-way through my A-4 Skyhawk list - so still years behind!

I've sent several messages on this to Gavin (the webmaster) but no response, and I notice people are not upgrading to Premium membership due to slow times (bit of a Catch 22 here as the extra income would pay for a larger/faster server). I have suggested he limit the size of photos being uploaded so they don't constantly chew up disk space and memory but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears so I either have to live with it or find somewhere else to log my stuff.

As for the Aviojet at FAB, it appears Dennis changed the record (for some reason) to show it as EC-ZDZ after you & I had logged it as EC-ZDF. The system stores it as how we log it - even if the record is subsequently changed - so you could search in 'my sightings' for EC-ZDF, but when viewing the record it would show up as EC-ZDZ! I've now amended it to be what it should be (it was EC-ZDZ with Casa initially but then became XE.25-01 with the SpAF and wore dual mks of EC-ZDF at FAB, as we saw it.

Hope this helps.

Take care & happy spotting!

Kind regards, Brian

HI Erdni,

Happy New Year to you & "Wingman" !

Sorry I missed your November request before my break. F-MEBL is 1428.

I think your RMAF prop is probably B.200T M41-04 but I've also put the Ce.402B M27-04 in the DB just in case. I've also tidied up the C-131. You were quite correct to see it as 54-2815 as it was still wearing USAF mks (even with the DoSAW) when I saw it at AMARC 05.12.1994.

Take care & hope to see you both later in the year! (I'm long overdue a trip to Ramstein & Spangdahlem).

Kind regards, Brian

If not, who was coded as such in 07/1987?

As I said, not much to find for you anymore. If it really gets possible for you to come over here, try to inform me 3 weeks before and I almost definitly can take time off from work. Nothing planned but going to MUC mid February and a wedding party 25/06. Maybe I can arrange an invitation for You if you bring one of your Rolls Royces as a gift;

Hi Erdni,

IL-62 c/n updated but no luck on the MB.339. My records don't show it squadron coded before it was with the Frecce Tricolori, and then it became 51-76 after they'd finished with it. I have searched my records and quickly online, but can't find anything coded 61-82.

Really sorry!

Hi Steve,

Happy New Year to you.

The system is running so sloooow that it's going to take me ages to get through your complete list. Because of the slow server response times I keep getting timed out whenever trying to add or amend records to large 'airlines' such as USAF and RAF and, to be honest, I'm getting fed up of sitting here staring at whirling icons before getting a time out message and I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to tolerate it before throwing in the towel.

I've emailed the webmaster several times but have had not one response! I've suggested he limit the size of photo's being uploaded so they don't constantly chew up processing time and disk space but it's obviously fallen on deaf ears. I thought it was a PlaneLOGGERS sight when I joined up not a PlanePHOTO site so really don't understand what's going on, and other members have refused to become Premium subscribers because of such slow response times which is really a Catch 22 as the extra income would pay for a faster/larger server!

I've gotten down as far as Provost G-BZRE/WW450 in your list and will try to load some more during the week when I have time. As you said, the Provost is confusing as I understand the oiks at St. Athan swapped the wings over when they were both there, so WW421 was scrapped in 1975 wearing WW450 wings and WW450 (wearing WW421 wings) became G-BZRE. Even the CAA website says this was ex WW421 - which is incorrect!

Kindest regards, Brian

Brian,

Totally understand your frustration and that of others who have posted regarding the speed (or lack of it) While we all like to see pictures of planes there are websites for that and most if not all of us are using this site predominate to log the numbers. As one post I saw earlier suggested, a lot of the pictures aren't that great anyway so doing away with them would be no great loss. No rush on the latest list, just when your time and patience allows you to work through it.

Steve.

Hello Brian,

Your last message worried me a lot. I hope that the webmaster won't leave the ship before giving us a proper solution/explanation. I don't have any back up plan and I really hope that we would be able to extract excel sheets to save our works.

Regarding the picture, I like it (you probably understood that) and I became Premium for that. It's easier to load my pic linked to my log. Plus everybody can enjoy it and having an aircraft profil with a proper picture is nice and professional. The issue is people loading tons and tons of pics of the same plane. The worst is when they load several pics they did the same day... Man we are wasting so much space !!!! Load 1 pic and if the plane change color, then load a new one !!!! The server is flooded with useless images...

But Brian, the fact that nobody is answering your message is making me really worried. I keep my premium account to support the server and the team but we really need an answer fro, the webmaster to reassure us on his intentions...

Anyway, thanks for my Dubai list, I'm gonna overload the server right now !!!!!

Paul

* **NO MORE UPDATES***

Sorry all but there will be no more updates until the response times drastically improve.

It's taken me over an hour to add two new US Navy aircraft records this evening which is ludicrous - and I have better things to do in my life than sit in front of a laptop screen watching whirling icons and getting timed out - while some people load 4 (yes 4!) photos of the same aircraft at the same location on the same date - chewing up valuable disk space - and it's only going to get worse as the lighter days and warmer weather approaches and people can eventually get out and about.

I have had absolutely no response from the webmaster to my various complaints about the slow system in the past 12 months - so clearly he's not interested in fixing it.

I joined this site to keep my logs in a single place (and in the hope to get rid of some paper from years back) but instead of being a planeLOGGER site it seems to have turned into a competition as to who can upload the most photographs and has now become a planePHOTOGRAPHERS site - something that I didn't sign up to (I load my photos on my Flickr pages).

Please feel free to send emails of complaint to the webmaster ([email protected]) in the hope that, if he's bombarded with complaints, he may decide to do something about it.

I have no idea on the current server capacity but as there is no size limit on uploading photos (something I suggested years ago) each 3Mb-5Mb photo is killing the disk space. At least when I add my occasional one I re-size them so they're only about 256Kb). I also have no idea what back-up process is in place (if at all) so if the server eventually crashes will we lose everything? And I know some of you have already asked if there's a master list of our logs that we can get from the system (just in case) and I have no idea!

Hopefully I'll be back sometime next month, if it's resolved.

Kind regards, Brian

Data Editor Posted by Warthog1 on 23 January 2022 - 12:26:06

Hi Paul (and everyone).,

I'm waiting to see what happens. Coding should be put in place immediately to limit the size of the photo and to allow one upload per sighting.

In the meantime, I'm exploring another online database that seems easier to load multiple sightings in a trip report and to add aircraft that's not currently in their DB.

At the moment I have to create a new record for every aircraft that's not in the current DB (most of my military sightings!) together with all the history and owners, then go back to log my sighting against it. That's why it's taking me so long to catch up with my personal logging and I've become so frustrated with the current situation as I'm wasting time looking at whirling icons waiting for the record to be created, but getting timed out because the server is too slow. Every time we create/add/amend a record the system completely rewrites the record (instead of just amending what's changed - even just adding a c/n) so as I deal with the biggest fleets in the world (most air arms are larger than airlines) it takes forever.

I'm not convinced it won't happen again in the near future when this new server gets chewed up with more multiple photos unless processes are put in place immediately.

I have a busy work week ahead of me, so no decision will be made before next weekend at the earliest, and I'll let everyone know if I'm staying or going.

Kind regards, Brian

Dear all,

I have, this evening, sent an email to the webmaster outlining a few things that, in my opinion, need to change in order to make the site work better and to encourage more Premium members (after all, that's what pays for the server & upgrades). We Data Editors give up our spare time for the love of the hobby!

It also includes a request for regular (at least monthly) updates from him as to what is being worked on to resolve any issues or enhance the system, as I for one, have seen a total lack of communication in this regard.

Depending on his response to my suggestions, I'll make my final decision on whether to continue or not.

I have received offers of data editor positions with two other online sites, but really would like to continue here as I don't fancy throwing away nearly 4 years worth of work, and having to input some 56,000 sightings (with thousands more to go) into another site.

I'll let you know my decision once I receive his response.

Kind regards, Brian

Hi Paul,

Many thanks for the kind offer. It's not the workload that's the issue (well, not most of the time until I get really busy with my business) but the system. Even when Dennis and I are both updating records at the same time (he's in Germany, I'm in the UK) we get slow response times. I understand the system re-writes an entire record (sometimes the 'old' USAAF/USAF types can have up to 20 different owners across their lifetime) and this gets re-written even if we change one letter in the text somewhere, so even if we had 10 military editors we'd still struggle with the system re-writing USAF database entries. Dennis has the same trouble with the size of his 'Private Owner' database, which is why I started using 'unknown' as it was a smaller size!

The positive news is that we have our first communication from the webmaster today as to what's going on, so at least I know he read my email. Just waiting on a response from him on my other points before I decide what to do at the weekend. You never know, you may be taking over my chair soon!

Kind regards, Brian

FAREWELL

Dear all,

I have received a response from the webmaster and it's not encouraging! He doesn't know what's causing the slow response times and he's not going to upgrade the server again (after this last upgrade) due to cost. He's also not willing to limit the size or number of photos being uploaded so I fear it'll be back to more slow responses once the multiple photos (they're still happening) chew up this new disk space. In fact I've noticed slower response times today. The mobile app is in a mess (and the company used to create it are too busy to fix it), and the fleet pages have been a mess for over 2 years, so I'm leaving.

I'll still be a member for now, but there'll be no more updates from me, as I'm now focusing on my own logs on another system. before I join them as a data editor (I'll let you know what it is in due course).

It's been a pleasure to chat to so many fellow enthusiasts and I wish you all a safe and happy spotting future.

Kindest regards, Brian

Hi Brian,

I am very sorry too.I'm also glad that I'm close to 100% of my military sightings because of your hard work in the last 2 years or was it 3? Thanks a lot!

Since you said nothing about giving up on the drinks I owe you, I bet you're clever enough to open up an 'I AM THIRSTY' topic early enough to give me time to either get a couple of days off or buy a one-way-ticket to Stingytown.

Should You ever feel unchallenged again, just open up a 'CSI Southampton' Topic for sightings so vague, that they should better be called wild guesses. That's all I could offer at the moment.

I'll hear from You, I fear

Hi Brian,

very sad news to see you leaving as an editor. You did a great job here and until a few months ago, the site was really getting interesting for the mil spotter and becomming a good source on information. This was mainly to your input.

Let´s see what happens here, maybe I change to another site as well.

Many thanks for working up my additions over the last years and all the best for you.

Hi Brian (if around still somehow)

I think it was You, who finally put the pressure up to finally get problems mainly solved. From my point of view, the site runs much better now. The fact, that you will not benefit from it somehow makes you fit with my definition of a hero.

Then again I see, You did some loggings today. Nice to know, you are still around.

Sad news for the hero: I found a Dak, 5 minutes ago. Dennis won't jump for joy like you would have done.

If they ever make a movie out of your life, they will be sorry, that neither Paul Newman nor Steve McQueen are still around to be casted.

Hi All,

Thanks for your kind words.

Just to clarify the situation, I'm not against photos on the site, indeed I've loaded a few myself, but I do object to the selfish few loading multiple virtually identical shots of the same aircraft, on the same day , at the same location in the same markings...utterly pointless when all it did was slow down response times for everyone else.

I have most of my civil records logged on this site, so (as previously stated) I'll still be a member for now until I gradually move all my sightings across to the new site I'll be working with going forward. I plan to start as a data editor with them at the end of February as there's a major update planned for the next couple of weeks loading 1.2m reg's and I'll be focusing (initially) on getting the US Mil side of the house in order, before taking on a wider mil role.

I'll let you all know where & when in the near future.

I've spoken with Dennis and he's not able to take on mil updates (as he's inundated with civvy light requests) so I guess they'll all have to go on hold until a new data editor can be found.

Take care, Brian

Considering the amount of request, having 2 mili editors should be a good idea. Even for civil.

It can't be a one man job...

Any news on the possibility to have a new editor for military reg?

People keep asking reg but there is nobody to create entries...
