Site suggestions

Hi,

I know that demands more data storage but can we change or upload the aircraft photo?

If so, you can creat some kind of ranking to enable photo uploaders otherwhise it'll be a mess.

Thanks!

can we change or upload the aircraft photo?

It's certainly something i'm looking into Paul, but a few decisions need to be made first on exactly how it's going to work, and how it's going to be monitored as well. I don't have a time frame for this as of yet.

Anyone any other suggestions for features they would like to see?

Is there a way to retain the unresolved sightings for later logging up as the number of frames in the db increase?

Thanks,

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Right now the sighting report is saved separately, so it is not affected when the database is updated and will be retained in your "My Sightings" list. However as it is not tied to the aircraft record, viewing the details of that aircraft in future updates will not show that you have seen that aircraft.

I'll work on a way of mapping these back up in the next update, but first I'll need a few records in there to play with - so get spotting ;-)

regards

Gavin

Hi

Many thanks for the new option to log aircraft that are not in database. Will this be used to add aircraft to the database or is it purely for the logger. The reason I ask is because I prefer to use ICAO codes for aircraft and airlines (maybe just laziness but it saves a lot of time for large logs and it is a uniform standard) Would like to know if using ICAO codes is acceptable. Shouldn't be a problem if manual logs are purely for personal use but if youre going to use them to update the database then not sure.

Regards,

David Channon

At the moment it is just used for your own personal log, although in the future I might update it to use these for data updates.

For now I would continue to do whatever is easiest for yourself, I can always work around it if need be.

I was wondering if you are going to make it so you can see other peoples logs? Also maybe being able to see everyones sightings on a specific date?

This is currently something I am considering. Right now only the last 3 entries are shown, but I plan on expanding this in future. I'm hoping to launch some new changes early next month, so keep an eye out!

How about a "delete multiple sightings" option, to easily delete the sightings that you posted wrong.

Cheers.

Must agree with tinek6, just added 50 regs with the wrong airport code and need to delete them so a "delete multiple sightins" option or maybe "edit multiple sightings" might be a ver good idea ;)

Must agree as well. I have noticed that I have some entries which have, for some reason, been duplicated. Perhaps I have 'clicked' too heavily or 'double clicked' without realising. A multiple delete would be ideal for when I come across these rogue entries!

thanks for the feedback guys. I'll look at adding the ability to bulk edit in the next update.

Keep the comments and suggestions coming, and feel free to help promote PlaneLogger.com by telling your friends, and mentioning us on other websites. Thanks.

Would it be possible in the future to add a facility that shows a full list of aircraft types that are included on the site and what may be included as the site develops. Will the site move into other areas, i.e light, military etc.

Posted by Deleted User on 07 February 2014 - 18:13:17

A database of light aircraft would be great, although I would probably be 6' under before completing my log!

Posted by Deleted User on 07 February 2014 - 19:48:40

...thinking about it, a light aircraft database would be much more manageable if the owner(s) were not included. This would certainly be the case when logging old records requiring manual entries. A British database would be simpler, by virtue of the fact that a registration is only used once.

I'd love to expand the database further and add in more aircraft, particularly light and military aircraft, but i'm not sure if the data is available in an easy to use (and cheap) format.

Keeping the current database up to date is a bit of a nightmare as it is, adding more to it will just make it even harder.

I'll certainly be looking into it though.

Can we have a list of what aircraft are supported by the database, Does it support planes such as the caravelle, f.27, hs/bae 748

Hi Andy,

I'll add that during the next update, and yes, all those types should be in the database.

Basically the database covers every civilian aircraft ever made, plus a few military aircraft (tankers / awacs, C-17, C-5, Space Shuttle). I'll get a full list for the next update.

It would be nice to be able to alter edit an entry after its been made. Instead delete and re-enter it. also when doing a multiple entry a A340 keeps appearing and registering and to keep the list accurate it has to be deleted.

This sounds a bit odd. Can you provide some more info on this - is it the same aircraft each time? If so what is the reg? Is it an aircraft you have added in the past?

Posted by anorak48 on 29 March 2014 - 21:22:18

yes its same aircraft every time no reg a340-311 no airline no date except the one i enter, and its not one i have entered I am only up to 1976 in my log and the a340 is a pipe dream then. this is how it appears copy/paste A340-311- Airbus PR 340-3

Yes. I noticed it too. It seemed to be resolved by removing the last comma, as you noted.

Is there any chance we could have a page selector so we can go to a certain page on our logs. at the moment to get say page 45 we have go through pages 1-44 first(100 per page) even more if 50 per page, and previous and next at the top of the page keeping the one at the bottom as well. these are only suggestions but I think they would be helpful.

Would it be possible to make it so we can edit the information for an aircraft?

As an example I just logged VN-A374 which is a Vietnam Airlines A332 but is listed as Air Vietnam, I think it could help keep the aircraft more accurate and updated.

If possible then we can update registrations because I also wanted to log VH-XSJ which use to be 9V-JST but is still showing as the old reg. And also change an aircraft from "on order" to "Active".

I know it might not be possible but thought i would suggest it anyway.

Another suggestion, Could you make it so you can see which entries were entered by the user for when it wasn't in the database?

had the same problem I just used the multiple entry form and added the number 1 after the reg then you can enter what you want manually just remember to delete the number afterwards. example OH-BLI flies for BLUE 1 I seen it operating a SAS flight. you can always up date it on a later date. hope this helps.

hey guys,

I updated the site over the weekend, adding a few new features:

  • List of supported aircraft (here)
  • Fleet listing / operator search
  • Ability to edit sightings.

Let me know what you want to see next!

they were added in the last update. Just click "Airlines" from the menu bar at the top of the page, then search for the airline you want. There's still a bit of work to be done merging records together, but for the most part it's working.

Something that recently came to my mind. If there would be an option to view how many different sightings we have that would be nice. Right now we have the possibility of viewing all our sightings (if someone posts a reg multiple times then the number of sightings grows) What I think of is that there would be a table or something that would show how many different , "unique" registrations did the user spot.

Posted by anorak48 on 22 July 2014 - 19:19:46

Tinek6

You get some as registration spotters(me) and some as airframe spotters. this as an example recently I have seen EI-JRD/E Boeing 737s operating for Ryanair even thou they are owned by Air Contractors. but I have not seen them flying for Air Contractors but when and if I do I will mark it in my log as Air Contractors that will make two sightings of the same registration this is how it works for me anyway. I can not quote for other users of this site.

Tinek - I personally collect reg's and I only mark it once, so each of my sightings are unique. If the same reg moves to a new operator, I will mark it again however.

Nighthawk - I know not really a problem for European spotters, but the DHC Beaver lists are somewhat "all over the place". No idea where you get your info from, but there is a really good site which keeps up to date with the DHC2 http://www.dhc-2.com/current_cover_page.htm

I also noticed there are no Horizon Air Q400's listed after N440QX - there are now at least another 12.

N447QX is registered under N447QK and so on working on it. SP-LLE has been corrected

anorak48 and VHarvey - it's simply a suggestion. Personally I have, on a external drive, all (or most) of the photos I've made, each in an appropriate folder for the registration and plane.

PS. SP-LLE is a LOT Polish Airlines plane, not Nayzak anymore.

I think the next part of the site that needs an upgrade is going to be the "view sightings" section. I want to beef this up a bit and make it easier to review logs, and provide some more statistics.

So if anyone has any suggestions on what they want to see here, let me know.

maybe some numbers to make sure they stay in order of entries when I make a entry at 9am but the entry I make 5pm appears before the entry at I made at 9am out of order of sighting(just a suggestion).

I look forward to having statistics for my sightings,

I Recently tried another logging site but it took too long to add even 50 regs, the only thing it had that I liked was top ten countries by reg

Anyway what I am trying to say by this is that this is the best site even without the statistics.

The main suggestion from me would be to be able to identify aircraft which have been flown on, with the flight details.

Another suggestion, as mentioned above, is statistics - top aircraft types, airlines, and cities where sightings were made.

Do you think in the View My Sightings section you could have a symbol next to sightings of aircraft that are not in the database?

would love some personal statistics involving sightings i.e. % of airline fleet sighted , No. of unique regos, etc..

Hey Gavin,

In the name of consistency (to enhance the db and subsequently the sightings stats), is there a script that could be run primarily on the aircraft models to remove items such as the hanging "-" at the end of the model? eg. A320-232-, A320-214-, ERJ-145LR-, CRJ200ER-, MD88-, MD-11-. This are from sightings logged when the db models were in that format.

Also, early on, the db only contained the type, not the model, such as A319-, A320-, 737-could our sightings be updated to the correct model?

I have probably about 1,500 or more entries with these errors that I would prefer not to correct manually.

Another example, I have MD82, MD-82- and MD82- sightings.

Thanks,

Stephen

Literally just found this wonderful resource, what a good site!!!

Couple of things I wondered about?...

1) Is there any facility to uplad my "back log" from a spreadsheet rather than day by day? 2) Can you search by construction Number? 3) Will there be an "Export" log option?

Thanks Ian
