I'd recommend just heading to the airport. If you go to the popular spotting places, you'll almost always find some spotters there already. They're generally an approachable bunch, just walk up and strike up a conversation, they'll be happy to help you.

I'm guessing your nearest airport is going to be Birmingham or East Midlands, I'm not familiar with those, but if you want to head a bit further to the north, the Aviation Viewing Park (AVP) at Manchester is excellent, and well worth a visit, although it's not easily accessible by public transport, so you might need to drive. You'll always find spotters there.

I'm sure someone else can post some recommendations of where to go around Birmingham and East Midlands.
