| Comments | mod to GR.7 10.6.1992; dbr 25.11.1997 ditched into the Mediterranean Sea 60mi off Cagliari, Sardinia, while attempting to land back on HMS Invincible at night (1 of 7 RAF 1 Sqn a/c deployed); a/c was unable to maintain the hover alongside the ship due to an under performing engine, overshot the ship into the pitch black, lost all power & ditched. Divers were able to fit floatation bags under the a/c to keep it afloat long enough for a crane to lift it back onto the deck of Invincible. Damage was restricted to sea water contamination and it was transported to RAF St. Athan for repair assessment but deemed beyond economic repair; to RAF Cosford as GIA 9302M; |
